Day 9 – Tuesday

Inverness

North to the Black Isle

    Travel Talk:

Despite the name, the Black Isle is neither an island or black. The colour in the name originates from the fact that it was once covered in dark, dense woodland, whilst the “isle” is because it is sandwiched between two large bodies of water, so access in times gone past would have been almost like visiting and island.

Today’s Itinerary

Breakfast

Breakfast will be in the kitchen. Put on the kettle!

Today we drive through Inverness and head to our most northern destinations.

We will visit Dunrobin Castle and see the falconry exhibition. We will also enjoy a dram at Glenmorangie distillery.

Dunrobin Castle

Dunrobin Castle is the most northerly of Scotland’s great houses and the largest in the Northern Highlands with 189 rooms. Dunrobin Castle is also one of Britain’s oldest continuously inhabited houses dating back to the early 1300s, home to the Earls and later, the Dukes of Sutherland.

Visitors can take a self-guided tour through the state rooms on the first floor before making their way through the smaller rooms in the older parts of the castle. Visitors are also able to visit our formal garden and Victorian museum. Afternoon Tea is also available.

Falconry at Dunrobin Castle

Falconry was originally developed as a means of hunting fast or difficult prey as food for the table, and is still practiced for this purpose in many parts of the world today. Our resident falconer demonstrates and explains the different hunting methods used by owls, hawks and falcons in a series of fascinating aerobatic displays. Every show creates superb photographic opportunities.

Lunch

Lunch will be somewhere close to Dunrobin Castle.
