    Isle of Skye

The Island of Skye is 50 miles long and the largest of the Inner Hebrides. The Island has a rich history covering many topics, such as: Dinosaur Fossils, Clan Warfare, Highland Clearances and the infamous ‘Bonnie Prince Charlie’ and the Jacobite Rebellion.

Today’s Itinerary

Breakfast

Breakfast will be in the kitchen or a cafe on the road.

Today we travel by car and ferry

We head west on the Isle of Skye to the towns of Portree and Uig.

Portree

In the 1700s, the town was a popular point of departure for Scots sailing to America to escape poverty. This form of use repeated during the potato famine in the 1840s. Both times, the town was saved by an influx of boats, often going between mainland Scotland and the Outer Hebrides, who used Portree’s pier as a rest point. The town also began exporting fish at this time, which contributed greatly to the local economy.

Fairy Glen

Uig

    Skye Wildlife

The Isle of Skye is also a great destination for wildlife watching with the White Tailed Sea Eagle at the top of bird watchers lists. Otters, seals, whales, dolphins and red deer are just some of the other impressive creatures that can be seen on and around the Isle of Skye.

SkyeXplorer Boat Trip

90 minute trip to the Ascrib Island to visit the Puffin breeding colonies and the resident seals (common seals and grey seals). There is a wide variety of seabirds around the islands including guillemots, gannets, razorbills, shags, graylag geese, etc.  With a bit of luck we might even see the largest bird of prey – the majestic white tail sea eagle. In addition to the puffins, the Ascrib Islands offer fantastic west coast scenery and the resident common and grey seal populations.
